Chesterfield, located in Derbyshire, UK, is a small market town just 24 miles north of Derby and close to the Rivers Ruther and Hipper.

The population of the city is 103,800 and it’s spread across 25.5 square miles, making it the largest town in Derbyshire.  This is significant, given that the city originated as a Roman fort in the first century. It then moved on to become an important Saxon village, and later, in the thirteenth century, one of Britain’s largest market towns.

Situated on a large coal field – which drove the city’s economy in the 1980s – Chesterfield is also the current employer is the Post Office sorting office. The tallest building in the city is the South Block of the city’s college, which has eight floors and is 125ft tall.

Elsewhere, Chesterfield in Missouri, USA, is the second largest suburb of St Louis, and is found 25 miles West of St Louis. With a population of 47,484 – around half that of the UK’s Chesterfield – Chesterfield, Missouri dominates a larger area, of 33.52 square miles. Chesterfield is also situated close to a River – the river Missouri.

Chesterfield, Missouri, is currently going undergoing a huge construction development plan, with two mall outlets completed, and many hotels moving into the area.  The tallest building in Chesterfield is the Drury Hotel, which has 12 floors, but is still the same height as Chesterfield UK’s tallest building, at 125ft tall.

Large areas of Chesterfield are built on a flood plain, which was flooded in the Great Flood of 1993. Since then, large barriers have been constructed to help prevent this occurring again.
